Hello, my name is Anastasia. I’m an artist, educator, and activist from Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. I am also an organising member of the global volunteer mutual aid collective @beesandwatermelons. I am proud to be the host and support person for my brilliant friend Dr. Ali Dawas and his team’s important Chuffed campaign.

Medical Points in Times of Crisis: A Story of Dedication to Patient Care from the Gaza Strip

Under the brutal conditions that swept the Gaza Strip, and after hospitals went out of service, exceptional grassroots humanitarian efforts emerged, and are embodied in the medical initiative led by Dr. Ali Dawas and his distinguished team.

The crisis in the Gaza Strip has disrupted (if not decimated) medical facilities, making life more difficult for the local population, especially those forced to live in shelters. Living conditions in these centres have become extremely difficult. The displaced face increasing challenges due to the lack of basic medical services. As a critical response to overwhelming need, the “Medical Points” Project was created by Dr. Dawas in the early days of the invasion – a responsive and innovative solution aimed at alleviating the suffering and providing health support to the affected displaced persons whose number is increasing daily due to the catastrophic situation faced by Gaza’s healthcare system and the people of Gaza.

This initiative aimed not only to provide the people of Deir Al-Balah with the medical care they so desperately needed but also to ensure that public health needs could be met and to prevent diseases that arise in such difficult circumstances.

Fourteen months later, Dr. Ali Dawas and his team of GPs, dentists, gynaecologists, general surgeons, orthopedists, ENT specialists, nurses, physical therapy consultants and pharmacists continue to provide life-saving healthcare to more than 20,000 displaced people in Deir Al-Balah and the immediate surrounding area.

The services provided by the medical points include;

initial examinations, treatment, and distribution of essential medicines. The team seeks to provide these services innovatively and effectively to ensure the greatest benefit to those affected. Thanks to the team’s high commitment and humanitarian spirit, the project has been able to achieve tangible results in improving the health conditions of the displaced, which also contributes to raising their morale and easing their burdens.

The efforts of Dr. Ali Dawas and his team reflect the values of cooperation and dedication in times of crisis. The experience of the medical points has demonstrated the importance of teamwork and coordination between medical teams and humanitarian organizations to meet the needs of affected communities. Through this initiative, the ability of medical teams to respond quickly and effectively to the requirements of crises is demonstrated daily, highlighting how humanitarian cooperation can be a driving force towards achieving tangible improvements under difficult circumstances.

Contributions of the medical team: A model of leadership and dedication:

The medical team led by Dr. Ali Dawas is not just a group of doctors and health practitioners, but a symbol of commitment and humanitarian vision. They provide a model of leadership in difficult times, as they overcome difficulties and challenges to provide the best possible care to individuals in need. Their dedication to serving their people and alleviating their suffering reflects the true spirit of humanity, highlighting the ability of medical teams to confront crises with efficiency and courage.

Amidst the catastrophe faced by the people of Gaza – children, patients, the injured and the elderly are in dire need of us to stand by the remarkable team dedicated to relieving their suffering and we encourage donors to “adopt” this project through your ongoing support.

Hello dear friends and comrades,

For those of you who may not follow Ali and his team on Instagram I am passing on this message from him to the world. Please share his message with as many people as you can – via @dr.ali.dawas on ig or sharing the attached slides through alternative channels.

Ali has also asked me to pass on his most humble gratitude to all who have supported his campaign, especially his regular donors – without your support and solidarity Ali and his team would not be able to continue their important work.

Your humanity in action is more meaningful than any of you who are not in direct communication with Dr Ali could possibly imagine. Our ongoing commitment to our brother gives him strength and hope and he wants each of you to know how profoundly important this has been over the past 17 months.

It is my genuine honour to call Ali my friend and to know that he has the friendship and solidarity of such a committed community – thank you. Let us all continue to stand by Ali and his team and continue to fight for them and for humanity. Together we are stronger

Thank you and Free Palestine!

To our dear supporters,

Dr Ali has asked me to thank you for your humanity and the support you have extended him and his team over the past 15 months. Each of you has directly contributed to the Volunteer Palestinian Doctors’ ability to be able to provide treatment and care to hundreds of thousands of Gazans. And he humbly asks each of you to continue to stand by him and his team so they can continue their life-giving work.

What many of you may not know, is that Dr Ali is from Beit Lahia in the north. Following the ceasefire, Dr. Ali, like so many others travelled back to his neighbourhood. It is completely unrecognisable. Nothing remains.

In Ali’s own words. “They destroyed the city of Beit Lahia…The extent of the destruction is indescribable and there are no means of life left.”

In response to the catastrophic destruction of Beit Lahia and the north, Dr Ali ad decided to pivot his initiative to set up x3 mobile medical point to provide desperately needed care across northern Gaza.

Due to the complete lack of any infrastructure or functional buildings, Dr. Ali needs our support to fund the following in order to establish x3 mobile medical points;

x3 medical caravans (Doctors / Pharmacy / Dressing room) ‏ x3 regular beds + 1 emergency bed ‏ x4 blood pressure monitors ‏ x4 blood sugar monitors ‏ x4 nebulizers ‏ x6 storage cabinets (3 for pharmacy, 2 for doctors, 1 for emergency) ‏ x4 complete desks (desk with chairs) ‏ x10 waiting chairs ‏ x1 water refrigerator ‏ x2 water barrels ‏ x1 Sewage system ‏ x2 bathrooms ‏ Solar energy capacity: 3.5 kW

As well as the ongoing supply of medicines, pharmaceutical and medical supplies as listed in the campaign profile

Dr Ali asks you to continue to stand by him, his team and the people of north Gaza. Please continue to donate, to fundraise, to amplify and to share this campaign. thee people of Gaza need Dr Ali and our support more than ever.

Should you have the capacity to fundraise in your own communities and would like any campaign materials or QR codes OR should you wish to become a fundraising partner on Chuffed, please comment on the campaign page and I will be in touch.

In gratitude, hope and determination

Anastasia (on behalf of my amazing friend, Dr Ali Dawas)
